Medical/Functional Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive plastic surgery involves surgically correcting deformities caused by aging, trauma, infection, and inflammation, or tumor growth. Oculofacial plastic surgeons are uniquely trained to evaluate the function of the eyelids and restore the eyelids to their proper appearance and function.
Common reconstructive surgeries include ptosis (droopy) eyelid repair, blepharoplasty (removal of the extra skin on the upper eyelid), eyebrow lift, ectropion (out turning of the eyelid) repair, entropion (in-turning of the eyelid) repair, reconstruction of the eyelids after removal of skin cancer, repair of the tear drainage system, surgery for thyroid eye disease including repairing eyelid retraction (stare) and orbital decompression. Orbital surgery involves the biopsy or removal of orbital tumors. Orbital fracture repair involves reconstruction of the eye socket and cheek after trauma. Removal of an eye may be necessary following trauma or damage from an infection or tumor.
