Implantable Contact Lenses
The Visian ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)
If you are a highly myopic (nearsighted) patient, you have probably been to see an eye doctor quite a few times for glasses and/or contact lenses. At Denver Eye Surgeons, we are proud to offer an alternative to your thick and restrictive glasses and contact lenses. This is known as the Visian ICL. The Visian ICL is also called the Implantable Collamer Lens and was created by STAAR® Surgical. This is FDA approved.
About Visian ICL - Beyond The LImits of LASERS
The Visian ICL is a long lasting solution for myopic refractive errors. Through its unique design, the Visian ICL offers excellent quality of vision and freedom from glasses and/or contacts. Patients who are not candidates for LASIK or PRK may still be very good candidates for the ICL and can enjoy life without corrective eyewear.
The Visian ICL Advantages:
- Quality of Vision – The Visian ICL produces not only improved visual acuity, but also excellent visual quality. Many patients experience the "Wow" factor when they experience the immediate improvement in the quality of their vision.
- Biocompatibility – Collamer, the 100 percent pure collagen copolymer lens material of the Visian ICL, is not viewed as a foreign object by the body's immune system.
Versatility – The Visian ICL offers a wider treatment range for myopia than LASIK and PRK procedures.
- Simplicity – Unlike traditional contact lenses, once the Visian ICL is implanted in the eye, there is no additional maintenance needed.
- Lens Placement – The placement of the Visian ICL makes the lens invisible to the patient and any observer.
- Reversibility – The Visian ICL was designed to be permanently placed in the eye. However, the lens can be removed if a patient's vision changes or if it otherwise needs to be removed or replaced.
What Happens During the Visian ICL surgery?
Prior to the Visian ICL eye surgery, your eye surgeon will make two microscopic holes in the iris using a laser. At the time of your Visian ICL surgery, your eye is numbed with a topical anesthetic drops. Your surgeon will make a small corneal incision through which the ICL will be inserted into the eye. The ICL is positioned behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The procedure takes less than 15 minutes.
This procedure is typically performed one eye at a time. There is very little discomfort and normally no pain associated with the procedure. Some drops will be prescribed and a visit is scheduled for the day after surgery where your surgeon will confirm stable ICL positioning and vision. Patients will be advised to arrange for someone to drive them to and from surgery.
Are You a Candidate?
The ICL provides an opportunity to those individuals who are not candidates for LASIK or PRK eye surgery. Some people who have a very high myopic correction, a thin cornea, or an irregularly shaped cornea may not qualify for corneal refractive surgery like LASIK or PRK.
The ICL may give these patients the opportunity to experience the same lifestyle change that LASIK has brought to millions. Studies are showing that outcomes from LASIK, PRK, or ICL surgery are comparable. At your free LASIK evaluation, your surgeon will determine which procedure is right for you.
