Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelift, is a procedure to correct the sagging of the eyelids. As we age, it is very common to experience droopiness, bags, looseness, puffiness and heaviness of the lids. Many times, the sagging upper lids can hang low enough to interfere with your upper field of vision. This causes people to hold their forehead and brow muscles higher to compensate. Age, genetic factors, and body chemistry cause these effects in people. Blepharoplasty surgery can give you a more youthful, lively and desirable appearance.
Upper lid blepharoplasty surgery is a relatively simple and minor procedure to remove the excess skin, muscle, and underlying fat from the upper lids. When the upper visual field is affected to a significant amount, it often becomes necessary to fix the upper lids. At this level, this procedure is considered medically necessary and is covered by insurance. Some people elect to have this procedure done at an earlier time for a purely cosmetic outcome.
Lower lid blepharoplasty surgery is also a relatively minor procedure to remove the excess loose tissue from the lower lids. This procedure removes the bags from under the eyes. Usually, this procedure is considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance.
Is Blepharoplasty Right for Me?
If your lids are affecting your vision or if you don’t like the way your lids appear, you may be a good candidate for a blepharoplasty procedure. Most patients that undergo a blepharoplasty procedure have significant complaints about their loose, puffy, and excessive eyelid skin. There are some excluding factors such as severe dry eyes.
If you are interested in blepharoplasty, please contact us. At Denver Eye Surgeons, our doctors have the knowledge, expertise, and equipment necessary to diagnose and treat eyelid disorders. We have a fellowship trained oculoplastics specialist on staff to help with the diagnosis and treatment of eyelid disorders. We are known as the Denver blepharoplasty specialists for the Denver Colorado area.
The time of surgery is usually less than 30 minutes for both upper lids. If the lower lids are also being fixed, the combined procedure may take up to an hour. A local anesthetic is applied to the lids to keep you pain free. Sedatives are administered to keep you relaxed and anxiety-free.
An incision is created in the upper eyelid crease so that the scar is hidden when the eye is open. The excess skin, muscle, and underlying fat is trimmed. The incision is closed with sutures.
If necessary, other procedures such as face lifting, ptosis repair, lower lid blepharoplasty, lower lid tightening, and brow lifting may be done at the same time. Your surgeon will discuss these options with you prior to the procedure.
The eyelids may appear red, swollen, and bruised for a few days to weeks following the procedure. There are potential side effects to these surgeries and your surgeon will be discussing these risks with you prior to surgery. Patients often are very happy and satisfied with the appearance of their lids once their surgical site is completely healed.
