Cataracts. Our vision will change with age.
One of the leading causes of vision loss in adults 55 and older is a cataract. Though cataracts are a natural aspect of aging, the good news is they are highly treatable. Cataracts can start with subtle loss of color vibrancy or blurring of vision, leaving their telltale cloudy lens signature. Left untreated, cataracts will develop further, becoming more severe and leading ultimately to impaired vision.
Early detection through an exam by your ophthalmologist can determine the presence and the extent of a cataract. When symptoms first appear, your doctor may be able to temporarily alleviate the effects of cataracts and improve your vision by prescribing glasses, strong bifocals, supplemental magnification, or by recommending the appropriate use of lighting and other visual aids. However, the cataract will continue to advance leaving surgery as the only option to restore your good vision.
Surgery to remove cataracts is safe and highly successful in restoring vision. In fact, in the United States it’s the most frequently performed surgery of any type. Each year over 1.5 million cataract surgeries are performed. Nine out of 10 people who have this surgery regain very good vision — somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40.
